Hemp vs. Marijuana: What’s the difference?

There are two strains of the Cannabis plant:  Hemp and Marijuana. Although marijuana and hemp can both come from the Cannabis plant, they’re distinctly different. The differences in their chemical composition is what makes them both unique. Both Hemp and Marijuana contain hundred of different cannabinoids, but the amounts of each cannabinoid vary greatly between Hemp and Marijuana.

So, why does this matter?

The two most notable cannabinoids are THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). While these compounds are found in both Hemp and Marijuana, the concentrations of them vary greatly. Marijuana has a high concentration of THC. THC is the compound that causes the “high” or intoxicating effect.  In marijuana, THC levels can reach up to 30%.

Hemp, on the other hand has less than 0.3% THC, so it is considered non-intoxicating.  However, Hemp contains significant amounts CBD. CBD is a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid, and its interaction with receptors in the central nervous system and immune system offers therapeutic benefits, creating balance in the body.
